I never planned on being a stepmom. As a matter of fact, I had a strong aversion to it…right up until I met my prince! He was a single dad of 5 kids ranging from toddler to teens. Me? I was your basic over-achieving workaholic mom of 2 (young teenagers when we blended), who owned my own business, whose life revolved around my kids and their activities, who was strong in my faith, and who had to have a clean house. Yeah, that started our first problem!
My prince is and always will be my perfect match. However, the step-parenting issues in our home have led us to the brink of separation. I will never love anyone as much as I love him and still, somehow the kids continue to affect our marriage, for better or for worse. We have figured some things out along the way, so I’m excited to share some things that could possibly assist you in your marriage and family.
Why Start a Blended Families Blog?
Well it isn’t very often that you come across a stepparent that had the opportunity to parent 7 unique children with distinct personalities from toddlers to young adults, and I’m still doing it after 12 years! I have more experience than most and I have made a lot of mistakes, learned many lessons, done family counseling, disconnected from my family for periods of time, and well, I’m still here doing my best and loving my wonderful blended family!
I’ve changed the names in each post so that when I share our family experiences others in my family can still have privacy. We have dealt with quite a few circumstances with our kids (all as totally unreasonable, uncool parents) including drug and alcohol use, gaming addiction, adjusting to same-sex attraction, deep depression, ADHD, anti-religion (in a religious household), and many other issues at home. The point is, we aren’t novices, but we love our family!
